Homology classes that can be represented by embedded spheres in rational surfaces

The problem of embedding spheres in rational surfaces CP~2#nCP~2 is studied.For homology classes u=(b_1+k, b_2,…, b_n) with positive self-intersection numbers, anecessary and sufficient condition to detect its representability is given when k≤5.     

Special Lagrangian Submanifolds with Isolated Conical Singularities. II. Moduli spaces

This is the second in a series of five papers studying special Lagrangiansubmanifolds (SLV m-folds) X in (almost) Calabi–Yau m-folds M with singularities x ₁ , ..., x _n locally modelled on specialLagrangian cones C ₁, ..., C _n in ^m with isolated singularities at 0.Readers are advised to begin with Paper V.This paper studies the deformation theory of compact SL m-folds X in Mwith conical singularities. We define the moduli space _X of deformations of X in M, and construct a natural topology on it. Then we show that _X is locally homeomorphic to the zeroes of a smooth map : _{X X} between finite-dimensional vector spaces.Here the infinitesimal deformation space _X depends only on the topology of X, and the obstruction space _X only on the cones C ₁, ..., C _n at x ₁, ..., x _n . If the cones C _i are stable then _X is zero, and _X is a smooth manifold. We also extend our results to families of almost Calabi–Yau structures on M.     

Compact Almost Kähler Manifolds with Divergence-Free Weyl Conformal Tensor

We prove that a compact almost Kähler manifold satisfying that a certain part of thedivergence W of the Weyl conformal tensor W vanishes isKähler.     

Linear low-rank approximation and nonlinear dimensionality reduction

We present our recent work on both linear and nonlinear data reduction methods and algorithms: for the linear case we discuss results on structure analysis of SVD of column-partitioned matrices and sparse low-rank approximation; for the nonlinear case we investigate methods for nonlinear dimensionality reduction and manifold learning. The problems we address have attracted great deal of interest in data mining and machine learning.     

Nonlinear Internal Damping of Wave Equations with Variable Coefficients

For wave equations with variable coefficients on regions which are not necessarily smooth, we study the energy decay rate when a nonlinear damping is applied on a suitable subrigion.     

The Chern Conjecture for Affinely Flat Manifolds Using Combinatorial Methods

An affine manifold is a manifold with a flat affine structure, i.e. a torsion-free flat affine connection. We slightly generalize the result of Hirsch and Thurston that if the holonomy of a closed affine manifold is isomorphic to amenable groups amalgamated or HNN-extended along finite groups, then the Euler characteristic of the manifold is zero confirming an old conjecture of Chern. The technique is from Kim and Lee's work using the combinatorial Gauss–Bonnet theorem and taking the means of the angles by amenability. We show that if an even-dimensional manifold is obtained from a connected sum operation from K(, 1)s with amenable fundamental groups, then the manifold does not admit an affine structure generalizing a result of Smillie.     

A NEW FORMULA WITHOUT BOUNDARY INTEGRALS ON A STEIN MANIFOLD

A new Koppelman-Leray-Norguet formula of (p-1,q) differential forms for a strictly pseudoconvex polyhedron with not necessarily smooth boundary on a Stein manifold is obtained, and an integral representation for the solution of (?)-equation on this domain which does not involve integrals on boundary is given, so one can avoid complex estimates of boundary integrals.     

Two Special Simply Connected Spaces of Nonpositive Curvature

We construct two examples of spaces homeomorphic to R ⁿ (n3) each of which has a closed geodesic and admits no isoperimetric inequality. The first is a complete polyhedral metric space of nonpositive curvature, and the second is an incomplete Riemannian space with nonpositive sectional curvatures.

Let be a connected, compact symplectic manifold equipped with a Hamiltonian action. We prove that, as fundamental groups of topological spaces, , where is the symplectic quotient at any value in the image of the moment map .

     

Proper actions on cohomology manifolds

Essential results about actions of compact Lie groups on connected manifolds are generalized to proper actions of arbitrary groups on connected cohomology manifolds. Slices are replaced by certain fiber bundle structures on orbit neighborhoods. The group dimension is shown to be effectively finite. The orbits of maximal dimension form a dense open connected subset. If some orbit has codimension at most , then the group is effectively a Lie group.
